Presenting Churma Ladoo recipe step by step. Churma is an authentic sweet recipe from Rajasthan, the neighboring state of Gujarat in India. It is prepared from coarse whole wheat flour, ghee, and Jaggery. Traditionally, sugar is not added in this recipe and hence I have not included sugar in this recipe. Being neighboring states, Gujarat and Rajasthan, they share similarities in their food, culture, and tradition. Churma Ladoo is one such example of this where Churma belongs to Rajasthan and Churma Ladoo belongs to Gujarat.
Traditionally, wheat flour has to be fried first then made churma has to be made of it, hence you cannot skip the frying of the wheat flour dough.
The health benefits of Churma Ladoo are:
Whole Wheat Flour: high in nutrients and fiber, minerals, protein, antioxidants, manganese, Phosphorus, Thiamin, copper, zinc, and iron. Reduces the risk of obesity in kids, supports healthy digestion and reduces inflammation.
Jaggery: Jaggery is a rich source of iron, prevents anemia, prevents constipation, strengthens bones, increases immunity, helps treat cold, flu, and with tonnes of other health benefits.
Ghee: Helps the baby keep warm from withing, helps relieve clogged nose, is a good source of energy, is a source of good fat, good for intestinal health, keeps constipation at bay in kids, and is good for heart and skin.
So let’s jump into the recipe.
Churma Ladoo Recipe – How to make churma ladoo at home
1 ½ cup Coarse wheat flour
4 tbsp ghee(clarified butter)
¾ cup Jaggery
¼ cup grated dry coconut
2 tbsp Til/Sesame
Ghee for deep frying
Poppy seeds for rolling the ladoos
In a frying pan, heat 1 tbsp ghee and fry the grated coconut and sesame seeds on low flame for 2 minutes.
Remove them and keep them to cool down.
In a deep bowl, to make Churma laddos, add the wheat flour, melted ghee, ½ cup water, or milk if you prefer, and bind the flour.
If you do not have coarse wheat flour, you to use 1 to 2 tbsp of Rava to get the coarse texture.
Combine all the ingredients, and bind it to a stiff dough. You do not need to knead the dough.
Divide into 8 equal portions and make cylindrical shapes of these 8 equal portions.
In another wok or Kadai, take the remaining ghee and heat it to medium to low heat.
Now deep fry this cylindrical dough 4 each time till it turns golden brown.
Do not move away from the gas since if the dough is burned, then the dough will turn bitter.
Drain the fried dough on a paper towel.
Once it cools down, break them into pieces and grind them to a smooth powder.
This ground powder is known as churma.
How to make Churma Ladoos:
In another pan, take the remaining 3 tbsp ghee and heat it. Add the jaggery and 1 tbsp water and let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes while stirring continuously.
Remove from the heat and add it to the Churma mixture.
Now add the coconut and sesame mixture and for flavor add cardamom powder.
Now mix everything well and let it cool down slightly.
Now make ladoos and roll it on the KhusKhus(poppy seeds) and your churma ladoo is ready
Now there are various ways people make Churma Ladoos, some people make it with wheat roti, fry them and they make the ladoos, some people make whole wheat dough then fry it, and then make ladoos. Whatever way the churma ladoo is made, the outcome of this is a masterpiece.
