18 Easy Baby Porridge Recipe

Porridge is the first food type of solid food that we introduce to our babies when they turn 6 months old. This is also the time when we introduce water and other liquids to our infants.

Porridge is a healthy way to introduce rice, dal, dried fruits, and other cereals to infants.

There are various types of porridges that we can give to our infants including fruit purees.

I try to make the porridge semi-liquid so that the baby gets the mix of both ie., the solid part which is the rice, dal, or cereal, and the liquid part which is water or milk.

How to make Baby Porridge:

  1. Take 2 Tablespoon of the mix
  2. Boil 1 and ½ cups of filtered water/milk
  3. Bring it to boil and add the mix to powder
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of ghee

Tips for making Baby porridge:

  1. The proportion of the cereal and pulse can be 2:1 or 3:1
  2. Ensure that you store these mix in an airtight container in a dry place.
  3. These porridge mix has a shelf life of 6 months when stored in air tight container
  4. When travelling, you can carry this mix.
  5. This porridge can be made with cooked dal water, milk, water or with some fruit juice
  6. Each time you grind any ingredient, sieve the powder thru a muslin cloth and then the big chunks that you get, grind them again till they are a smooth powder
  7. Ensure for the porridge, you make the powder to a smooth powder or else it might be difficult for the baby to swallow the porridge

So, let’s jump to the recipe:

1. Rice cereal porridge

Rice Cereal porridge

Ingredients:

1 cup rice (you can include any variety of rice)

¼ cup roasted Bengal gram

Method:

Wash and soak rice for 30 minutes

Sundry the rice and in a saucepan dry roast the rice for 10 to 12 minutes.

Grind the rice

Grind the roasted Bengal gram

Mix both these powder and store in an airtight container.

2. Oat’s porridge:

Oat’s porridge:

Ingredients:

½ cups Oats

1 cup water – you can adjust the water as per the consistency you need Dry fruits powder

Method:

In a  saucepan, add water and let it come to a boil.

Once the water starts boiling, add the oats and let it cook

Remove it from the pan and add dry fruits powder

You can also add some honey or fruits of choice

3.Semolina/Sooji porridge

Rava/Sooji porridge

Ingredients:

½ cup sooji

1 tbsp ghee

1 and ½ cups water/milk

Method:

In a saucepan, roast the sooji with ghee,

Add the water till the water/milk is absorbed

Serve it with a choice of fruits.

4. Broken wheat/Dalia porridge

Dalia porridge

Ingredients:

2 tbsp Dalia or broken wheat

¼ tbsp roasted almond powder

Method

Pressure cook Dalia with 1 cup of water for 3 whistles

Once it cools down, blend it in a grinder till smooth paste

Add the almond powder

Add pieces of banana or 1 tsp of honey and serve

5. Ragi porridge:

Ingredients:

Ragi powder 1 cup

Roasted Bengal gram ½ cup

Method:

Dry roast the ragi powder till aromatic

Grind the Bengal gram till fine powder

Store this mixture in an airtight container.

7. Apple oats recipe

Apple oats porridge

Method of preparation:

This recipe is the same as oats porridge. Once the oats porridge is cooked just add grated apple to the porridge and your apple porridge is ready.

8. Apple rice porridge

Ingredients:

2 tbsp rice

½ apple

½ cup water

Method

Wash and soak rice for 10 minutes

In a saucepan, add water, rice, and apple

Cook till rice and apple is tender

Grind it in a blender and serve it

9. Sabudana/Sago porridge:

Sabudana/Sago porridge

Ingredients:

2 tbsp Sabudana pearls

1 cup milk or water 1 tbsp almond powder

Method:

Wash and soak Sabudana for 2 to 3 hours or overnight

In a saucepan add the milk or water and let it come to a boil.

Add the Sabudana pearls and let them boil till they translucent

Add the almond powder and serve it with a choice of fruits.

11. Groundnut Poha Porridge:

Groundnut Poha Porridge:

Ingredient:

1 cup Poha

3 tbsp groundnut

4 tbsp roasted Bengal gram

Method:

In a saucepan, dry roast Poha till it is crunchy

Keep it aside, roast the groundnut till aromatic and its skin starts moving apart, keep it aside

Let it cool

Remove the groundnut skin

Grind the Poha, groundnut, and roasted Bengal gram to a fine powder.

Store it in an air-tight container.

12. Soya Rice porridge:

Ingredients:

1 cup rice

¼ cup soybean

Method:

Wash and soak rice for 30 minutes

Sundry rice

Roast rice and Soya bean

Let them cool down and grind it to a smooth powder Store it in an airtight container

13. Corn Porridge:

Corn porridge

Ingredients:

Roasted corn powder ½ cup

Moong dal powder ¼ cup

2 tbsp til/sesame powder

Method:

Mix all this powder and store it in an airtight container.

14. Puffed rice Porridge

Puffed rice porridge

Ingredients:

1 cup puffed rice/Murmura

¼ cup roasted Bengal gram

Method:

In a saucepan, dry roast the puffed rice for 5 minutes

Remove it, in the same saucepan dry roast the Bengal gram for 2 to 3 minutes

Once they cool down, grind both the ingredients and store it in an airtight container

15. Moong dal Ragi porridge

Ingredients:

½ cup Ragi powder

¼ cup moong dal

1 tbsp groundnut

Method:

Roast the moong dal and groundnut separately.

Next, roast the ragi powder till aromatic

Grind the moong dal and groundnut and mix it with the ragi powder

Store it in an airtight container.

16.Jowar/Sorghum porridge

Ingredients:

Roasted Jowar flour ½ cup

Roasted Bengal gram ¼ cup

Roasted groundnut powder 1 tbsp

Method:

Dry roast all these ingredients

Cooldown and store it in an airtight container

17. Soya Poha Porridge Recipe

Ingredients:

2 tbsp Soya bean

2 cups Poha

Ajwain 1 pinch

Method:

Dry roast both these ingredients separately

Once cooled, grind them to a fine powder

Add the pinch of ajwain and store it in an airtight container.

18. Bajra Porridge

Ingredients:

1 cup Bajra

¼ cup Moong dal

Method:

Clean the millet and dal

Wash and sundry them

Once they are dry, dry roast them for 10 minutes separately
